Government funding is to be made available to provide vital fire-fighting services on the State's 21 one offshore inhabited islands. Pressure for such facilities has been heightened by the tragic death of three elderly women in a malicious house fire on Inishbofin, Co Galway, in July 1999.
A total of 3,150 people live year round on islands.
