A French chef who claimed all Irish people were racists is on his way home following his second appearance before Galway District Court this week.

However, the judge said there was no reason why he should not come back to Ireland as he had been well-treated here.

Kadir Benyoucef (24), who is from Nimes, had been working as a chef in a Galway city pub when he first came to the attention of the Garda after getting involved in a row outside his former apartment at Abbeygate Street, Galway, on May 15th.

Benyoucef was arrested and taken to Galway Garda station. While being released without charge at 6am the next morning, he told Garda Cathal Rodgers that all Irish people were racists before smashing a pane of glass on the Garda station door.

Garda Rodgers arrested the accused, who appeared before Galway District Court last week in a dirty and bloodied state - the effects of the row he had been involved in on the Sunday.

He pleaded guilty to smashing the glass and breaching the peace. He also apologised through his solicitor, Adrian MacLynn, for his comments about Irish people.

Benyoucef, said Mr MacLynn, would pay compensation if given a chance.

Judge Mary Fahy adjourned the case until yesterday for that purpose, and Benyoucef appeared in court having paid full compensation.

He again apologised for his comments made the previous week, and told Judge Fahy he was returning home.
