The Freedom of the City of Dublin is to be conferred on Bob Geldof and Ronnie Delany tomorrow.
Both men will be honoured at an open-air ceremony in Dawson Street, where a live music set by Kíla will be followed by the presentation of scrolls and crystal globes, chosen to symbolise the recipients' achievements on the world stage.
Geldof and Mr Delany will then be invited to address the assembled crowd.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Catherine Byrne, who will preside over the ceremony, said Dublin City Council had done well to honour both men.
"The contribution Ronnie Delany has made to Irish athletics is enormous. He has without doubt inspired the world-class Irish athletes that followed in his footsteps to compete and win against the world's best, just as he had done," she said.
"Bob Geldof has achieved so much as a humanitarian over the past 20 years, applying himself resolutely and wholeheartedly as a rock star communicator to relieving . . . poverty in the world's poorest countries," she said.
Geldof's father, Bob snr, said yesterday he was pleased for his son. "I'm delighted. He's a good lad, and I'm proud of him, of course," he said.
The honour has been conferred on only 72 people since 1876.
