The female Private First Class (19), held by Iraq for more than a week until US special forces freed her, has broken legs and a broken arm.

She was with a maintenance convoy ambushed by Iraqi forces on March 23rd. She has been described as being in a stable and good condition.

Ms Lynch, from Palestine in West Virginia, was rescued from a hospital in the southern Iraqi town of Nassiriya on Tuesday night.

Military sources near Nassiriya said US Marines had staged a decoy attack that enabled special forces to rescue Ms Lynch from the hospital in the town.

The special forces also recovered the bodies of two US soldiers in the raid at the Saddam Hospital north of the Euphrates river.

Ms Lynch was one of 15 soldiers listed missing, captured or killed when a 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company convoy made a wrong turn and was attacked by Iraqi tanks and fighters.

Five of the captives were shown on Iraqi television as well as the bloodied bodies of up to eight men, prompting President George W. Bush to warn that anybody mistreating US prisoners would be punished as "war criminals".
