Fourteen people have beenkilled in violence in Indian Kashmir, police said today asthe army reported Pakistani shelling over the region's disputedborder.

Police said Indian security forces shot dead four separatistMuslim militants in two encounters in the northern district ofKupwara.

"Both the clashes erupted along the line of control," a policespokesman said, referring to the de facto border that dividesKashmir between India and Pakistan.

Indian border guards shot dead five people in the Ramgarh sectorof Jammu, about 350 kilometres south of Srinagar,minutes after they crossed the international border from Pakistan, aborder guard spokesman said.

Two separatist Muslim militants were shot dead by army andpolice units at Tsukar village, 30 kilometres north of Srinagar.

Police said two soldiers and two civilians were injured inthe exchange.
