Four US marines have been killed in action in restive Anbar province, the US military said today.

The marines, assigned to Regimental Combat Team 7, died yesterday.

No further details were available.

The casualties followed the deaths of four other marines in Anbar, west of Baghdad, on Thursday.

More than 2,570 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the March 2003 US-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein.

US President George W Bush last week boosted US troop levels in Iraq after increasingly savage sectarian violence raised fears that the country could slip into civil war.
