Four members of the same family were injured in a bomb explosion in eastern Algeria today, officials said.

The bomb exploded as a farmer and his three daughters were driving by in their car to return to their farm at El-Kennar near Jijel, 360 kilometers (200 miles) east of the capital Algiers.

Two other bombs were later discovered in the same area and defused.

A guard had suffered shotgun wounds in an attack in a village near Jijel late yesterday.

Algeria has been wracked by an Islamic insurgency war since 1992, when the army cancelled the second round of a general election that a fundamentalist party looked set to win.

Fighting and attacks on civilians since then have claimed at least 150,000 lives.
