Four charged in attempted murder case

Four people were charged yesterday with attempting to murder a woman in west Belfast last weekend

Four people were charged yesterday with attempting to murder a woman in west Belfast last weekend. The charge related to an incident at a travellers' camp on the Glen Road when a shotgun was discharged into a caravan, missing the woman and her three children. The accused are Mr Terence Edward Monghan (28), Mr John Christopher Monghan (31), Mr Terence Paul Monghan (18) and Mr Thomas Stokes (29), all of Colinglen Park, Belfast.

They were remanded in custody after the magistrate dismissed defence submissions that three of the defendants were not lawfully before the court. The legal submission related to the re-arrest of the trio immediately after two High Court judges granted an order for habeas corpus directing their release. Lawyers are now expected to take fresh High Court proceedings to challenge the magistrate's ruling that he had jurisdiction to hear the case.
