The PSNI has opened a murder investigation following the death of a man in Dungannon, Co Tyrone last night.

Police said two women who tried to help Mr Hughes were injured when they were struck by a taxi.

It is understood a group of young men had been involved in a confrontation with partygoers earlier in the night and may have been waiting for the family to return home. Locals suggested at least three young men were in cars near the family home and confronted Mr Hughes. It is suspected stolen taxis were used by the gang.

Mr Hughes’ father Frank, a taxi driver, was murdered by loyalist paramilitaries in 1990.

The PSNI issued an appeal for anyone who was near Lisnahull Road in the early hours of this morning and witnessed the attack to come forward.

They also asked for people who were in the Irish National Forrester's Club in Lower Scotch Street in the town last night to contact detectives.

Officers are also trying to trace the movements of a beige taxi that was later found burnt out in the Ponderosa area of Dungannon.

Superintendent Brian Williamson said the killing was vicious and a despicable crime.

"A family is having to deal with the loss of a loved one," he said. "We are determined to bring all those responsible for this heinous crime before the courts. People should be able to go about their business without fear of violence or attack."
