Four men have appeared at a special sitting of the District Court in Limerick in connection with the discovery of arms and ammunition at a house near Patrickswell on Tuesday evening.

The men were charged with possession of an explosive substance and a Sterling sub-machine gun on the same date.

The Garda seizure was made during a search as part of an ongoing investigation into criminal activities in the Limerick area, in particular, the murder of Mr Kieran Keane on January 29th this year.

All four were remanded in custody to appear at the District Court again next Wednesday. There was no application for bail.

Altogether, six people are being detained in connection with the find, including a woman, who was arrested last night in the South of the city and is currently being held in Mayorsbone Garda Station.

A fifth man was arrested shortly after 11am today and brought to Henry Street Garda Station.
