Italy's triple Olympic skiing champion Alberto Tomba was acquitted of allegations of tax fraud by a tribunal in Bologna today.

However Tomba's father Franco was handed a 16-month suspended sentence for tax evasion following the hearing at which five other people linked to the family were being tried.

The sum involved was 11 million euros (9.5 million dollars).

Public prosecutor Enrico Cieri had requested a 12-month prison sentence for 35-year-old Tomba, the slalom specialist considered one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time.

His former manager Paolo Comellini has already been acquitted of tax fraud.
