A former Franciscan brother who claimed he had been abused as a child pleaded guilty at Galway Circuit Court yesterday to indecently assaulting boys in a Co Galway village almost 30 years ago.

Robert Keoghan, in his 50s, from Tramore, Co Waterford, pleaded guilty to eight charges of indecently assaulting the boys between 1969 and 1972. Most of the offences occurred at a monastery in the village, which cannot be named.

Mr John O'Donnell, barrister for the accused, said his client had been sexually abused as a child and was under the care of a psychiatrist. Judge Harvey Kenny remanded Keoghan on continuing bail to appear before Galway Circuit Court again on November 23rd.
