British Airways' BA223 flight from Heathrow to Washington DC finally took off tonight after being delayed for just over three hours over terrorism fears.

American authorities eventually gave the flight clearance to proceed just after 6 p.m. and it took to the air at 6.18pm, a BA spokeswoman said.

This was the third successive day the BA223 flight had been delayed over concerns about safety and today's disruption saw around 200 passengers sitting onboard the plane, since 3.15 p.m., waiting to take off.
