The All-Ireland Fleadh Ceoil could move to a Northern Ireland venue for the first time within the next few years, the organisers of the event have disclosed.

The director-general of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Mr Labhras O Murchu, speaking in Ballina, confirmed that talks were being held to hold the Fleadh north of the Border for the first time in its 47-year history. "There is a great interest in the North in Irish music and song, and it is our desire to move to a northern venue. The climate is right with the peace process."

Members of the Newry & Mourne District Council travelled to Ballina at the weekend with representatives of the Ulster Comhaltas to see the organisation of this year's event.

Warrenpoint, Co Down, has been suggested as an ideal location for the festival, with accommodation available in a 20-mile radius of the town.
