Five pipe bombs found in a field in Co Clare have been made safe by the Army's bomb disposal unit.

The team, based at Collins Barracks in Cork, was sent to the scene yesterday near Tulla after gardaí discovered what were described as viable improvised devices. The area was sealed off pending the arrival of the bomb squad at 11.30am.

No controlled explosion was required, and shortly before 2pm the devices were disarmed. Gardaí were then able to start a further, more thorough, search of the locality.
