The first section of the O'Connell Street Spike has completed most of its journey towards Dublin city centre and work will begin on erecting the monument tomorrow morning.

The six sections of the Spire were built at Radley Engineering in Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

The first section - 20.1 metres long - is now in Baldonnell, Co Dublin and will remain there till 10.30 p.m. before finishing its journey to the city centre tonight to avoid traffic disruption.

Work on erecting the 120-metre high construction will begin at first light tomorrow.

The project is expected to be finished early in the New Year.
