Several units of the Dublin Fire Brigade attended a fire in the basement car park of an apartment block in south Dublin in the early hours of this morning.

The fire at Beacon Quarter South in Sandyford is believed to have started in a parked car some time before 2am.

An estimated 300 people were forced to evacuate the building while emergency crews dealt with the blaze.

There were no injuries and the damage was reported to be minimal. Gardaí are today investigating the cause of the fire.

Fine Gael Housing Spokesman Terence Flanagan said the fire highlighted the major problems which this type of accommodation can have in meeting fire safety standards.

"There could have been dreadful consequences if this fire occurred at a different apartment block that is not up to scratch when it comes to fire safety," he said.
