FIFA names venues for 2006 World Cup

FIFA today named the 12 cities chosen to host the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

From a list 15 candidates, the successful cities were Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, Hamburg, Kaiserslautern, Nuremberg, Cologne, Hanover, Gelsenkirchen, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Dortmund.

The bids that missed out were Bremen, Dusseldorf and Monchengladbach. Leverkusen withdrew its bid last week.

FIFA has donated a grant of €172.5 million towards the refurbishment of stadia in the 12 cities.

The opening match of the tournament will take place in Munich on June 9th, 2006.
