Fianna Fáil is to take over the chairmanships of Kerry County Council and Listowel Town Council following pacts made with Sinn Féin.

Fianna Fáil councillor Mr Ned O'Sullivan is expected to be elected mayor of Kerry County Council on Friday after a deal was struck with Sinn Féin.

Fianna Fáil members have also taken over the chairmanships of the other two town councils in Kerry - Tralee and Killarney.

In Listowel, Fianna Fáil has made what has been described by Sinn Féin as "a technical arrangement" for control of the chair.

Meanwhile, the town council has agreed to dispense with the title of mayor and revert to the older title of cathaoirleach because of objections by its new holder, Ms Maria Gorman, that the title was "not gender neutral".

Ms Gorman, a Fianna Fáil member who was elected chairwoman with the support of Sinn Féin, is taking up the position for the fourth time.

The word "mayor" was a male term with particular pitfalls when applied to women, she said.

The word could be spelt differently, had a double meaning and could end up as a term of disparagement.

"It's a slang word in reference to women and is inappropriate," she said.

In Killarney, Fianna Fáil's Mr Brian O'Leary, who lost his seat on the county council after eight years, was elected mayor on his first day on the town council.

He received the backing of Fine Gael councillor Ms Sheila Casey, as well as that of an Independent.

Ms Casey's decision to support Fianna Fáil, against a Labour/Independent alliance, has been frowned upon by the Fine Gael party nationally and has added to divisions in Kerry South. However, she has insisted her support for Fianna Fáil for the position was "for the good of the party locally".

In Tralee, Fianna Fáil and Labour have continued their alliance on the town council to see Mr Johnny Wall (FF) become mayor, with outgoing mayor, Mr Terry O' Brien, Labour, elected vice-chairman.

Meanwhile, two councillors from Independent Fianna Fáil (IFF), the party founded by the late TD Neil Blaney, have been elected as the mayors of town councils in Co Donegal.

Cllr Dessie Larkin, a son of the late senator James Larkin, is the new mayor of Letterkenny and Cllr Phillip Diggin is the new mayor of Buncrana.

Both councillors polled impressively, but overall it was a disappointing election for IFF, which lost two of its four seats on Donegal County Council.

Its sole TD, Mr Niall Blaney, is expected to come under pressure from Sinn Féin in Donegal North-East in the next general election.

There has been speculation that IFF might disband and its members rejoin Fianna Fáil, but this has been dismissed by senior party sources.
