A Co Galway father who faces almost 200 charges of raping four of his daughters been further remanded in custody.

A Co Galway father who faces almost 200 charges of raping four of his daughters been further remanded in custody.

The 48-year-old has been charged with 195 counts of raping four of his daughters over an eighteen year period and two counts of neglect and cruelty towards a son.

He made his fourth appearance in court when he appeared before Harristown District Court today where he was remanded to appear again on February.

His wife, who faces a total of 18 charges of cruelty and neglect of her children between May 2002 and June of last year, was remanded in custody at Athenry District Court on Tuesday.

The 45-year old mother is to appear before Ennis District Court next Friday.

The couple, who have been in custody since they were arrested at their Co Galway home on Christmas Eve, cannot be named for legal reasons.

The father’s solicitor Sheena McCarthy said today her client was consenting to a remand in custody to February 5th when he will appear before Harristown District Court.

The man was charged at Athenry District Court on Tuesday this week with 140 counts of rape against one daughter from 1991 to 2008. He was also charged with 24 counts of rape of another daughter from 1991 to 1996.

The man faces 21 charges of rape of another daughter in a period from 1991 to 1996.

These charges are in addition to 10 rape charges, which include a fourth daughter, and two counts of neglect and cruelty towards a son, which were put to the fact at an earlier court sitting in Galway.

A previous sitting in Ennis was told that all of the couple’s children are now in care.
