A FATHER and son were seriously injured when a gang of men attacked them in their Co Clare home early yesterday.

The alarm was raised at about 1.30pm after an injured man collapsed outside Kilrush Garda station. He had been taken there by his wife, who reported that their son was being attacked at their home just a few hundred metres away.

The attack occurred at Place du Plouzane off Burton Street in Kilrush, when four men arrived at the house and attacked a man in his 20s. The young man’s father went to his aid, but was also attacked and received a blow from a blunt object to the head and also sustained a fractured arm. As his wife took him to the Garda station, the attack continued inside the house.

Gardaí went to the scene, and discovered one man lying seriously injured on the floor of the kitchen while two others were also found with injuries.

The most seriously injured man, the intended victim, sustained multiple stab wounds to his leg, arm and back, as well as being struck across the face with a slash-hook. He managed, however, to fight off his attackers, injuring at least two who were also at the scene when the emergency services arrived. Both had stab wounds.

As one of the alleged attackers was being transported to hospital, he became aggressive in the ambulance. Paramedics pulled their vehicle to the side of the road and the injured man fled on foot. It is understood he was later taken to hospital in Limerick by car.

The scene was preserved overnight and gardaí later undertook door-to-door inquiries.

No arrests have been made and gardaí say they would be grateful for anyone with information about the incident to contact Kilrush Garda station at 065-9080550.
