A viable explosive device was made safe by the Army Bomb Disposal Team in west Dublin this evening.

The device was found in a green area near the Rossmore Road in Ballyfermot this evening.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team was sent out on the request of gardaí, and a cordon was put in place around the scene at about 5.30pm.

The device was made safe on site without the need for a controlled explosion. It was then moved to a secure military location for technical examination.

The scene was declared safe at 6.15pm.

Further testing showed the device was viable, and its component parts have been handed over to gardaí to assist in their investigation, a Defence Forces spokesman said.
