THE FAMILIES of missing women will gather for a special pilgrimage in Co Wexford this afternoon.

Retired Garda diver Tosh Lavery, from Waterford city, who has organised the event, appealed for members of the public to remember those who have gone missing in recent decades.

He said that the pilgrimage will be held about “500 yards” from where Fiona Sinnott (19), from Bridgetown in Co Wexford, was last seen on February 9th, 1998.

The families of Ms Sinnott, Jo Jo Dullard from Kilkenny; Dublin boy Philip Cairns and Co Offaly woman Fiona Pender are due to attend.

Mr Lavery yesterday cited several high-profile cases in the southeast, such as missing woman Imelda Keenan, who was last seen on January 3rd, 1994, near her residence in William Street in Waterford city. However, he said it was also important not to forget lesser known cases such as that of Eileen Collins, who has been missing since she left her home at Rice Park in Waterford city in March 1977.

Mr Lavery is a member of Searching for the Missing, which is hosting an event at Our Lady’s Island in Wexford at 3pm, in remembrance of the missing – including those missing at sea.

The former Garda diver worked in the aftermath of the disaster at Whiddy Island Oil terminal in Bantry Bay in January 1979.
