The terror attacks in the US last month are likely to have delayed the anticipated return to growth of the euro-zone economy, Bundesbank president Mr Ernst Welteke said today.

Mr Welteke, who as head of the German central bank also sits on the governing council of the European Central Bank, urged euro-zone governments not to increase their deficits in any economic stimulus programmes.

"Implementing an economic stimulus programme would jeopardise budget consolidation" in the single currency area, he warned in a speech.

On the issue of price stability, Welteke said he remained convinced that area-wide inflation would "fall back below 2 per cent next year."
