More than €100,000 worth of damage was done when a new 02 mobile phone mast was knocked down in Kerry on Monday night.

The mast, which was over 30-foot high, had just been erected at Lahard, Beaufort, on the main Killarney to Killorglin road. It was not operational when the incident happened.

Signs opposing the mast were still visible on poles in the area yesterday.

Gardaí said an investigation had been launched and the incident was being treated as criminal damage.

The mast was brought down sometime between 9 p.m. on Monday and 10 a.m. on Tuesday. It also caused considerable damage to an adjoining hut that contained electrical equipment.

The detective branch in Killarney is investigating the case.
