Vienna - The European Union will not decide when to take on new member countries before the year 2000, the European Commission said yesterday. The EU this month started membership negotiations with the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and Cyprus.

Earlier this month the Commission criticised Slovenia and the Czech Republic over their slow progress in implementing the EU regulations necessary for membership of the 15-nation bloc.
