The European Commission is to allocate €32 million euros in humanitarian aid for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) this year.

The announcement comes three days after officially renewing development aid to on condition that progress is made on reconciliation in the war-torn African state.

In a statement, the commission said the humanitarian aid will target food and health needs, particularly in less accessible regions.

Plans for the assistance were drawn up before the eruption last week of the Nyiragongo volcano, just outside Goma.

The European Union has already released €5 million euros in aid for victims of the disaster.

There are fears in Congo that earth tremors may cause further damage to buildings and Goma and endanger human life.
