EU move on Internet child porn

EU telecommunication ministers yesterday agreed to strengthen co operation in combating child pornography on the Internet

EU telecommunication ministers yesterday agreed to strengthen co operation in combating child pornography on the Internet. They asked the Commission for a report on the issue, which will probably lead to the adoption of self regulatory mechanisms like those being put in place in Britain.

The Minister for Communications, Mr Lowry, who chaired the meeting, welcomed the initiative from the Belgians and said the new British system was a good example of what may eventually emerge from the Commission.

In Britain, two Internet industry trade associations have joined to finance the newly established Safety Net Foundation to take action on illegal material. (Material which is illegal in its traditional form is also illegal on the Internet in the country in which it is consumed - the problem is tracking it down.)
