The EU Commissioner with responsibility for food safety, Mr David Byrne, said last night he was monitoring closely the measures being taken by each member-state to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in the wake of the epidemic in Britain. Each EU state has imposed restrictions but nowhere are they as stringent as those adopted in the Republic.
