Essays deadline nears

The deadline is fast approaching for entries to a chemistry essay competition organised by the Royal Irish Academy

The deadline is fast approaching for entries to a chemistry essay competition organised by the Royal Irish Academy. It is open to second-level students from the Republic and Northern Ireland and includes a prize fund worth £950.

Students are asked to write a newspaper-type article explaining some aspect of chemistry in an interesting, informative and easily understood way. The 1,500-word article can be about any topic in chemistry and entrants are strongly encouraged to include good-quality graphics to help support their report.

The first prize is a cheque for £450 and a John Coen bronze sculpture. The winning article will be published in Irish Chemical News.

Second prize is £250 sponsored by the Royal Society for Chemistry. A matching third prize of £250 is offered by the Society of Chemical Industry. The Irish Times and AGB Scientific Ltd are sponsors of the competition.

Entries should be typed, double-spaced on A4 paper, and six copies of the article should be submitted to the RIA. These should be sent to Mr Pauric Dempsey, Assistant Executive Secretary, Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2 before the deadline of Friday, April 27th next.
