THE Government has no clear, coherent employment policy, according to the Engineers' Branch of the MSF union, which represents 600 engineers, scientists, architects, chemists and computer professionals.

At a special meeting yesterday, the branch called for clarity from the Government with regard to its employment policy.

A statement issued by the MSF union branch said "there is no clear employment policy driving decision-making at national level".

"As many as nine different Government ministries hold responsibility for unemployment issues," it said.

The branch called on the Government to assign clear accountability and transparency to one Government department for employment policy, its implementation and reporting.

It also urged the Government to establish a "quality index" for jobs and to give State enterprise a clear commercial mandate".

The branch said it wanted the Government to address declining investment levels in the Irish economy as a matter of the utmost urgency to put in place a strategy on science and technology and to seek from the EU reviews of the impact of its policy implementation in the Irish economy.
