The Government hopes to have electronic voting in some constituencies by 2002, the year by which the next general election must take place, and for all constituencies at the European Parliament and local elections in 2004.
The Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Mr Dempsey, said that the decision cleared the way for tenders for the hardware and software and for testing by the Department, returning officers and local authorities.
