A woman in her seventies was in a critical condition in Wexford General Hospital last night after being knocked down while trying to cross Gorey main street yesterday morning.

The woman, whose name has not yet been released by gardaí, is believed to have been attempting to cross in front of a lorry when she was struck by the vehicle and dragged for a short distance at about 11am yesterday.

She was taken to Wexford General Hospital where a spokeswoman said she was in a critical but stable condition yesterday evening.

The driver of the lorry was visibly shaken after the incident, with many onlookers also in tears. Gardaí cordoned off the scene and put traffic diversions in place.

Local councillor Malcolm Byrne (FF) said the town's main street is widely seen as an accident black spot, with a lot of heavy goods traffic, particularly between Rosslare and Dublin. Mr Byrne said this level of traffic was likely to continue until a new bypass opens in November next year.

Last December, 35-year-old Andrea McGlynn, from Courtown, died after she fell under the rear of a 13-metre articulated lorry on the main street.

Ms McGlynn managed to push a pram containing her three-month-old son out of the way before she was killed.
