Eight people were taken to hospital this morning following a car crash in Co Louth.

Eight people were taken to hospital this morning following a car crash in Co Louth.

The two-vehicle collision happened on the main road between Drogheda and Donore shortly after midnight.

Gardaí said there were five occupants in one car and three in the other. They are aged between 16 and 33 years of age.

One of the injured, a 33-year-old man is in a critical condition and a 23-year-old woman is in a serious condition.

The injured are being treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. The other injured parties are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A HSE spokeswoman said the Ambulance Service received a call at 12.22am.

"A total of 6 ambulances from the Drogheda, Ardee, Navan and Dundalk arrived at the scene. It took 7 minutes for the first ambulance to arrive," the spokeswoman said.

The road between Drogheda and Donore was closed for a time this morning.
