Four men and four women were charged with public order offences at a special sitting of Nenagh District Court yesterday followed a series of disturbances including mini-riots in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, early yesterday morning.

Gardai were alerted at about 3.30 a.m. that an assault on a young man had taken place outside a fastfood outlet in Pearse Street, Nenagh.

They intervened and the man was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital suffering from a broken jaw and a possible fractured skull.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that following the assault there were "on-going fights, brawls, and mini-riots throughout Nenagh, involving as many as 40 youngsters".

Eight people were arrested between 4.30 a.m. and 5.30 a.m. by local gardai, who received back-up from Killaloe, Roscrea and Templemore.

The eight arrested are in their late teens and were remanded in custody with consent to bail at the special sitting of Nenagh District court.

They will appear in Limerick District Court in relation to the charges on July 20th.

An investigation into the assault on the man is ongoing and gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact them in Nenagh at: 067 31333.
