Dublin Corporation and SIPTU are meeting at the Labour Relations Commission today to try to avert a strike by the city's engineers.

SIPTU branch secretary Mr Mike Jennings said yesterday the corporation was advertising additional posts before agreement had been reached nationally with all 34 local authorities. The union had in good faith been involved in a review group, he said, "but the crucial point is we have not agreed to the implementation of these posts."

The corporation's personnel officer, Mr Frank Kelly, said all the unions, including SIPTU, had "signed off on" the new structures locally. These provided additional career opportunities for engineers "and they should be shouting hallelujah in the streets", he said.
