NUI Maynooth Lecture Series

"Chain Reaction" is a series of public science lectures aimed at a broad audience, but particularly at students studying science subjects for Leaving Certificate. The next lecture, titled "Nuclear Power - no thanks?" by Dr Ian Hughes, will be held at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday, February 10th in Lecture Theatre 2, John Hume Building, NUI Maynooth North Campus on the Maynooth-Kilcock Road. UCD Conference on the Future of University Education

"From Newman to the Market - Shaping the Future of University Education" is the theme of a two- day public conference to be hosted by UCD's Faculty of Human Sciences. It takes place on Thursday, February 10th from 5.30 p.m. to 7.15 p.m. and Friday, February 11th from 9.15 a.m. to 3.45 p.m.

Admission to the conference, which will be held in the O'Reilly Hall, Belfield, UCD, Dublin 4, is free and all are welcome.

TCD Darwin Day Lecture

Prof Paul Sharp, professor of genetics at the University of Nottingham, England, will give a public lecture, presented by the Humanist Association of Ireland, on "Darwin, Evolution and the AIDS Virus" this Thursday, February 10th at 8 p.m. in the Walton Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin. Admission is free.

DIT Lunchtime Music Recitals

The series of DIT lunchtime recitals continues on Wednesdays in the theatre at DIT, Rathmines Road, Dublin 6, at 1.10 p.m. The soloist tomorrow is soprano Sadhbh Dennedy. Admission is free.

Public Lectures at Free University of Ireland

The series of public lectures on belief systems continues at the Free University of Ireland, 55 Prussia Street, Dublin 7 tonight at 8.30 p.m. when Shaheed Satardien will talk on Islam. The series continues weekly until March.

European Piano Teachers' Association EPTA Ireland presents "Alexander Technique: How it Benefits Musicians" at 10 a.m. on Sunday, February 13th and a masterclass in "Breathing and Posture as Musical Technique" at 2 p.m, at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Westland Row, Dublin 2. The "Young People's Experiences of Crime Programme" Spring Seminar Series at the Centre for Social and Educational Research, Dublin Institute of Technology continues with a lecture from Prof Wendy Holloway, Open University, and Prof Tony Jefferson, University of Keele. They will present "Producing and Analysing Data: the Case of Racial Violence in Stoke" on Thursday, February 10th from 4 to 6 p.m. in The Boardroom, 23 Mountjoy Square, Dublin 1.

Annual Festival of Youth Orchestras

As part of the programme of events for Cork 2005, the 10th Annual Festival of Youth Orchestras will take place in Cork City Hall on Saturday, February 12th . Featuring eight youth orchestras with ovemore than 600 musicians, the festival will showcase of the finest in young orchestral talent.
