If you would like to surprise your nearest and dearest this Christmas with handmade goodies or an expertly decorated cake, one of the short upcoming courses at the Cake Box (formerly Careme Sugarcraft) in Blackrock, Co Dublin might be the place to start.

The series kicks off on October 31st with a one-day chocolate confectionery workshop; participants have the chance to learn the basics of working with chocolate and to make novelty items such as Santas and sweets. This one-day workshop costs £40 including lunch and it is also running on November 2nd and 3rd. All you need to bring is an apron.

For the more serious minded, there is a six-week sugarcraft course starting on November 12th, which goes into the intricacies of producing the perfectly iced cake. This costs £90 and some experience of sugarcraft is desirable.

No experience is needed for any of the Saturday morning workshops, which will teach you how to make sugarpaste twigs, leaves, berries and field mice among other things at a cost of £18 per workshop or £45 for three. Each day between November 28th and December 12th there will also be a daily demonstration from 12 noon to 2 p.m. of Christmas novelties, at a cost of £10.
