Order in the house, please! Transition Year students from 12 schools are currently being lined up to take part in a new initiative under the Public Access to Law programme. The competition will involve students who must assume the roles of solicitors, barristers, jurors, witnesses and court reporters, to form a legal team and compete with other schools in mock court cases. According to the organisers, due to "an already strong level of interest, a selection process has been implemented" for the competition and the closing date for entry has already passed.
The competition, which is sponsored by A&L Goodbody Solicitors, will be staged in the Four Courts in Dublin on Saturday, April 8th. The two best schools will compete in the final, which will take place in the Supreme Court and will be judged by senior members of the Irish judiciary. Each participating school will be assigned a solicitor/barrister who will act as a mentor for the team on legal procedure and court etiquette.
