This week In my life talks to the comedian Jason Byrne
Current job: Comedian.
What schools did you go to? St Attracta's primary and then to Ballinteer Community School, Co Dublin.
What was your best subject? French. I was the best in the school and was invited to translate at the French embassy for the ambassador. He said he understood English perfectly, but didn't quite get the "Jaysus's" and "wot's".
What was your worst subject? My worst subject had to be puis-je voir la chambre et excusez-moi, ou se trouve les toilettes?
What's the boldest thing you ever did in school? I suppose the time I got a horse from the local field and brought it into school, I then dressed up as a cowboy and saved the day (true story).
Who was your favourite teacher? I had many favourites. One was a Mr Titch, who was from Brazil and taught us Irish, our class ended up with a Brazilian accent for the Leaving Cert. We also had a metalwork teacher called Tony Wood, he had many injuries - metal was his life but not his friend.
Who was the object of your first crush? Any girl that had breasts.
Were you cool or nerdy in school? I was a cool nerd. I was tall and skinny with red hair and glasses, but I made sure I knew all the blokes that kick the shit out of you and when the fighting began...I ran.
Did you go to college? The College of Commerce in Dundrum, but after a year me and a friend were called into the office and asked to leave because we were disrupting the college - not the class, but the college. We're still very proud of that even to this day.
What song reminds you of school? Beethoven's fifth in two minor movements with fiddles on the lap.
Were your schooldays the best days of your life? I'd have to say not the best days because I never liked getting up or learning, but I had some of the best friends ever in B.C.S and to them all I say: "Have you got 10 pence for the tuck shop?" (What's a tuck shop Daddy? Ah shut up and text yourself a bar!!!)
• Jason Byrne appears at a Tsunami Benefit Gig in Vicar Street, Dublin, tomorrow.
