National Union of Journalists - phone (01) 874 8694); there are more than 3,000 NUJ members in the Republic. Of these, 800 are freelance.

Colleges approved by the NUJ:

DCU; DIT; NUI Galway; Griffith College, Dublin; Colaiste Dhulaigh; Senior College, Ballyfermot

Cut-off points for full-time undergraduate courses 1998/99:

DIT: Journalism 450* (* random selection applied; not all students at this level were offered places) DCU: Journalism 465

Postgraduate courses:

DCU: MA in journalism; MSc in science communication (jointly offered with Queen's University Belfast) DIT: Graduate diploma in journalism NUI Galway: Higher diploma in applied communications; ard dipoloma i gcumarsaid fheidhmeach

PLC courses:

Many PLC colleges offer courses in journalism, media, broadcasting, radio, etc. Check with your local VEC or PLC college. Ballyfermot Senior College, Dublin, and Colaiste Dhulaigh, Dublin, are NUJ approved colleges.
