An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale rattled Cairo Satuday, Egypt's official Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.

Security sources said no injuries had been reported.

MENA quoted the president of the National Geophysics Institute, Mr Ali Tealab, as saying the epicentre of the earthquake was located 34 km (21 miles) northeast of the southern Cairo suburb of Helwan at a depth of 17 km.

Egypt experiences periodic earthquake activity, and in 1992 a quake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale killed more than 500 people.
