An alleged drugs dealer and Veronica Guerin murder suspect, Mr Brian Meehan, could be back in Ireland facing 18 charges relating to the journalist's killing, and importing drugs and arms, by the middle of next month following an expedited Dutch initiative on the case.

The Supreme Court in The Hague will rule on Mr Meehan's appeal against his handover to the Irish authorities on June 2nd next. Only 15 per cent of extradition appeals taken to the Supreme Court are overturned, and in most cases only those in which technical faults were made or the appellant faces persecution or possible execution if extradited are overturned.

The quick handling of the Meehan case is said to be in response to concerns by the Garda anxious for Mr Meehan's return.

Mr Meehan was arrested after gardai followed his girlfriend as she travelled from Dublin to meet him in Amsterdam last October. To date the Criminal Assets Bureau has frozen a bank account in Austria containing £700,000, and a number of properties.
