A primary school in Dungiven Co Derry was badly damaged last night after it was attacked with beer bottles, cans and glasses. Dungiven Control School on Glenshane Road has been under "sustained" attack since before Easter, according to headmaster Mr Geoff Madden.

Between 12.30 and 1 a.m. nine windows were smashed by what is believed to be a group of drunken teenagers. Mr Madden said the oldest of the group was 15 and the youngest 11 years’ of age.

He told ireland.comsince Easter he has had 35 windows replaced in the school. He described the playground this morning as resembling a battlefield after two bins were filled with cans, bottles and glasses collected from the area.

He added that closed circuit television cameras installed after Easter did not deter last night’s attack. The school has been damaged on five previous occasions.
