Carbon emissions from Dublin city could be halved over the next 20 years, Lord Mayor of Dublin Emer Costello has told an international conference of mayors, writes Olivia Kelly.

Dublin was on track to becoming one of Europe’s first “energy-smart”cities, with the world’s first carbon neutral convention centre, a sustainable urban park and retro-fitting energy saving schemes for homes, she said.

Some 1,000 mayors and city leaders were in Brussels yesterday to celebrate the signing of the Covenant of Mayors which commits towns and cities to go beyond EU targets for the reductions of emissions.
