The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)has asked that publication of the report into a Dublin Bus crash in which five people were killed be postponed because it could prejudice a fair trial.

Three men and two women were killed and 20 others injured when an out-of-service bus went out of control on Wellington Quay in February 21st.

A spokeswoman for the company said Dublin Bus received a letter from the DPP yesterday requesting the report be delayed until his office concluded its deliberations.

"We consider that we must accede to that request, and accordingly the report will not become available until a later date," she said.

The spokeswoman said the decision was taken following consultation between CIE Chairman Dr John Lynch, Managing Director Mr Alan R Westwell and the chairman of the inquiry committee, Mr Arnold O'Byrne.

"The company would like to express its sincere regrets to the families of the bereaved and to those injured and their families for the delay in publishing the report," she said.

"We fully recognise their need to be informed of all the circumstances of the tragedy, and we will release the report as soon as that becomes possible.

"In the meantime Dublin bus will continue to provide support and assistance to those affected by the tragedy at Wellington Quay."

The report is expected to cite an error by the driver of the out-of-service bus as a cause of the accident. It is also understood to have definitively ruled out the possibility that the accident was caused by any mechanical failure.
