Chicago - A combination of two AIDS drugs protected nearly 99 out of 100 unborn babies from contracting their mothers' HIV infection in a French study released yesterday, though one of the drugs may threaten both mother and child.

Combination therapy with the anti-AIDS drugs zidovudine and lamivudine reduced the incidence of foetal transmission to 1.6 per cent in a study of 437 infected women.
