Two men from the midlands were killed when a car and a van collided at Birdhill, on the main Limerick-Dublin road, in Co Tipperary, yesterday. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The car was towing a trailer when the accident happened at 8.40 a.m. at Lackneva, Birdhill, on a straight stretch of roadway.

Two units of Limerick Fire Service used cutting equipment to release the men and a post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday at Limerick Regional Hospital.

The men were named later as Mr Victor Foote, in his 40s, of Kilbricken, Mountrath, Co Laois, and Mr John Dempsey (24) Tullow Road, Carlow.
