The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Desmond Connell, has expressed disappointment at developments in Northern Ireland.

Speaking at a vigil Mass in the Pro-Cathedral on Saturday, he said: "It has been a disappointing week for the promotion of peace in Northern Ireland.

"It is always easy to make statements, but not easy to anticipate their impact on a delicate process.

"I wish to reaffirm hope at this difficult time and to encourage constant prayer throughout the diocese for the gift of peace.

"May the God of peace grant this gift for which we long and for which many have laboured with tireless generosity."
