Wales' Mark Williams sentenced Ken Doherty to a hat-trick of UK Championship final defeats when he beat the Dubliner tonight.

The 1999 champion collected the winner's cheque for £84,500stg at York's Barbican Centre following a 10-9 victory.

It meant Doherty, who was soundly beaten 10-1 by Ronnie O'Sullivan 12 months ago, has suffered his third final defeat in the competition.

He also fell at the final hurdle to Stephen Hendry in 1994.
